Intersex fish found in river

"Male fish carrying eggs--intersex fish--have been found in Pennsylvania's Susquehanna, Delaware and Ohio river basins..." stated the Los Angeles Times. They lay the blame on water tainted by chemicals according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

These chemicals come from or are often found in water runoffs from the manure of cows, chickens and pigs and sewage dumped into rivers from wastewater plants. These animals are not free ranging but cooped up in tight places which centralizes their waste products. It is no more Home on the Range, but home in a cage and wash the animal byproduct down and away. Many farmers and feed lots have installed various methods of dealing with the manure but apparently in Pennsylvania those efforts are not enough.

The author of the report stated, "We weren't expecting the issue to be as widespread as it was. the number of fish affected and the severity was surprising."

Folks--we are allowing a small segment of our population AND municipalities to pollute streams of water we all would like to see clear and carrying good fish.

In my new novel, AS ALL MY FATHERS WERE, this issue is brought to the surface by Filoh Smith, a 92 year old ex-farmer hell bent on getting farmers along the Platte River to quit polluting the mile wide inch deep river. The novel will be out September 1. Watch for it.
